Questions

Before you start

Are these the real PSI exam questions?

No. Actual exam questions are confidential. Every question in the bank is original and written to cover the same knowledge areas the exam plan lists, so you understand the material rather than memorize answers.

How close is the practice exam to the real one?

It uses the same format: multiple-choice questions with one best answer, weighted by the exam plan. The Inspector practice exam has 110 questions (90 are scored on the real exam) and the Repair Technician practice exam has 120 (100 are scored on the real exam). The test screen is laid out like a typical computer-based exam, with a timer, flags and a review screen. The 70% target on the score report is a practice goal set by SmogPrep. It is not the official passing score.

Is SmogPrep affiliated with PSI or the Bureau of Automotive Repair?

No. SmogPrep is an independent study product. PSI administers the exams and BAR issues the licenses. For official requirements, fees and scheduling, go to BAR at bar.ca.gov and to PSI.

Which bank should I buy?

Buy the bank for the license on your BAR application. If you plan to hold both licenses, the bundle costs less than buying them separately.

Is my progress saved?

Your purchase is tied to your SmogPrep account, so you can sign in on any device. Practice progress (missed questions and unfinished exams) is saved in the browser you study in.

How long does access last?

90 days (about 3 months) from the day you buy. It's a one-time payment with no subscription and no automatic renewal. The date your access ends is shown in the practice section when you're signed in. If you need more time, you can buy again.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. The bank runs in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer, so you can study on a break at the shop.

Do I still need BAR-approved training?

Yes. The question bank helps you prepare for the exam. It does not replace any training or experience BAR requires before you can test.
